The Department of Pediatrics (Neonatology included) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University was established in 1937. It is the first pediatric department engaging in modern high medical education in Northwest China. After years of development, it has developed into a children's hospital with unique medical characteristics. The establishment of the Department of Pediatrics in March 2011 furthered its professional advantage in diagnosis and treatment, which is well-known in Shaanxi province, in Northwest region, even the whole country. At present, the department is composed of the first ward, the second ward and the neonatal ward. We have more than 80 beds, and is specialized in pediatric nervous diseases and rehabilitation, blood and endocrine diseases, respiratory diseases and asthma, heart and kidney diseases, neonatal diseases and children health care.
●Pediatric neurology specialty
The specialty of pediatric neurology firstly monitor the blood drug concentration of anti-epileptic drugs in Northwest China. At present, a variety of detection methods such as gene diagnosis of epilepsy and individualized treatment gene detection of anti-epileptic drugs have been applied in clinical practice, and are equipped with advanced EEG monitoring equipment. Our department has got a rapid development on children epilepsy and paroxysmal disease, the treatment and systematic management of new anti-epileptic drugs on children, the grading management and evaluation of treatment of children refractory epilepsy. At the same time, we take the ketogenic diet in the treatment of refractory epilepsy of children .The control rate of epilepsy has reached a domestically and internationally advanced level.
The department is the designated rehabilitation institution of Xi'an Disabled People’s Federation and Xincheng Disabled People’s Federation. At present, there are a variety of rehabilitation measures such as transcranial magnetic stimulation therapeutic apparatus, radio frequency electrotherapy, brain ultrasound scanning and limb rehabilitation training, which can meet the rehabilitation treatment of various neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy and mental motor retardation.
●Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Specialty of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology in our hospital is one of the earliest units in the pediatrics of Northwest China. We have been treated various types of pediatric blood diseases such as leukemia, anemia, and lymphoma since 1970s. We have with blood wards and laminar flow beds. We are the designated hospital of major disease insurance for leukemia of new rural cooperative medical care in Shaanxi Province.
The Department has carried out diagnosis and treatment of various children’s blood system disease such as pediatric anemia, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, hemorrhagic disease, leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndrome, hemophagocytic syndrome, Langham cell histiocytosis, disease associated with BE virus infection, allergic purpura, etc. The successful cooperation with Pediatrics Surgery helped us accumulate rich clinical experience. We won the second prize for scientific and technological progress in Shaanxi Province, the second prize and third prize of science and technology awards of Shaanxi Provincial Higher Education School. We are a training base for pediatric masters and doctors.
Our hospital has an advanced blood disease diagnosis experimental platform. We apply advanced techniques such as blood cell morphology examination, immunophenotyping, chromosome examination, bone marrow biopsy, molecular biology experiment, and leukemia fusion gene quantitative detection to accurate diagnosis of blood tumors, disease assessment and optimizing the treatment plan. Our staff work together closely to improve healthcare, follow-up, education and parental psychological counseling, treatment level of children's hematology and oncology.
Specialist leader: Xiao Yanfeng, Ph.D. supervisor, professor, deputy director of the department, served as the deputy chairman and member of the provincial and municipal societies, and a number of academic journal editors. We have undertaken many projects in provinces, cities and countries, and has conducted in-depth research on children's iron deficiency and leukemia, and won the second prize of Shaanxi Science and Technology Progress Award.
● Pediatric Endocrinology
The department was one of the earliest pediatric endocrinology clinics in Shaanxi province which has rich clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment of pediatric endocrine diseases. It has been well equipped with a number of advanced high-Tech medical equipment. We also take the responsibility of conferring master and doctoral degree of clinical medicine.
Since the founding of the department, it has made tremendous progress in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood growth retardation, short stature, precocious puberty, delayed puberty, gynecomastia, micropenis, microtestis, obesity and related diseases, diabetes, thyroid disease and so on. We are characterized by 4 special clinics, including short stature, puberty related diseases, obesity and diabetes.
Assessment and treatment of short stature. We have set up a diagnostic system, from growth assessment to skeletal age determination, growth hormone stimulation test, thyroid functional measurement, gene detection, nutritional evaluation, bone metabolism and pituitary imaging examination to deliver stratified diagnosis and individualized treatment.
Eevaluation of obesity and obesity-related disease and “3+2 weight loss program”. Obesity has short- and long-term effects for children and adolescent’s health. However, no known mature treatment for this condition right now. Based on clinical experience, we have established a set of interventions, named “3+2 children weight loss program”, to treat obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, liver steatosis, and diseases associated with pubertal development, which has acquired favorable curative effect.
Diagnosis and treatment of abnormal pubertal development. We have established an evaluation system of sex hormone and sex hormone-related organ’s function to diagnosis precocious puberty, delayed puberty, and abnormal development of sexual organs. The department was the first one to treat abnormal pubertal development in Northwest China. We Integrated Western medicine with TCM, whose results were satisfactory. In this process, we developed our own characteristics of diagnosis and treatment.
Pediatric diabetes clinic. Focusing on the standard system of diagnosis and treatment for diabetes, our team, including several specialists, can provide professional treatment, instruction, consultation, and nutritional guidance. Besides, we have electronic blood glucose monitor and insulin pump to provide real-time monitoring and fine control, which can minimize pain and improve compliance. Also, it can significantly reduce the incidence of various complications caused by high blood sugar.
●Pediatric Respiratory and Asthma
Children's respiratory and asthma specialty is one of the key subjects in children's hospital. It is also the first major to be authorized by master degree awarding point, educating many postgraduate students. The specialty is managed by Professor Hou Wei and Li Jing. Currently, it is the main committee unit of Children Healthcare Society in Shaanxi Preventive Medical Association, Children Asthma Prevention Society in Shaanxi Healthcare Association and pediatrics group of Allergy Society in Shaanxi Medical Association. In 1998, our department was the first one in China to set up the "special clinic for children asthma", whose influence keeps expanding, finally forming our unique advantages in the diagnosis, treatment and management of children asthma. Research orientations include: diagnosis and treatment of respiratory tract infectious diseases and its etiology; study on molecular genetics and psychological behavior of childhood asthma; children respiratory function and diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases; children's respiratory intervention technology; the diagnosis and treatment of children's respiratory diseases and its pathogenesis. Our team members led and participated in 4 national natural science foundation projects, 13 scientific and technological research projects and natural science foundation projects in Shaanxi province. 9 new technologies and new treatments were developed, and more than 80 papers were published, including 8 SCI papers. 50 meetings have been held, including more than 10 international meetings.
● Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University is an integration of medical treatment, teaching, scientific research. It is a comprehensive three-stage neonatal care center established in Xi'an at present. In 2017, the Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission of Shaanxi province awarded it the provincial critical illness newborn treatment and referral center, Xi'an critical pregnant woman and newborn treatment and referral center. At present, it mainly undertakes the treatment of intensive care, critical premature, critical newborn and neonatal surgical diseases.
To take the lead in establishing a multidisciplinary team of MDT for newborns in and out of the province (covering southern Shaanxi, central Shaanxi, northern Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu and Shanxi) to form a neonatal transport chain and strengthen the management of neonatal critical illness. Treat children successfully with the help of our hospital's key disciplines of pediatric surgery, otolaryngology department, stomatology department, anesthesiology department, imaging department and other department.
The department has a professional medical team and a rational ward design filled by humanization and warm internal layout, providing a good hospital environment for the newborn. In order to avoid cross-infection, the ward adopts closed and standardized monitoring management and implements whole-course unaccompanied treatment for children, providing bedside care and touch for children during hospitalization, and setting up a warm therapeutic environment for children at 24-hour stable temperature. Routine techniques such as deep vein catheterization, PICC catheterization, axillary vein puncture, umbilical vein puncture, blood purification, synchronous exchange of peripheral blood, nursing of bird's nest, follow-up of high-risk children, and support and care of premature infant development were adopted.
Through development, neonatal pediatrics has developed into a professional system including neonatal intensive care and neonatal follow-up clinic. Neonatal intensive care includes comprehensive management of premature infants and follow-up, infection, breathing, digestion, nerve, nutrition, metabolism and other aspects, and the implementation of neonatal surgical management before and after surgery. At present, the hardware, professional technology and academic level of neonatology have reached an advanced level in China.
Department is equipped with 30 NICU beds, as well as advanced newborn ordinary frequency ventilator, high frequency respirator, CPAP therapeutic apparatus, empty oxygen mixing apparatus, the giraffe multi-functional warm box, multi-function baby salvage bed, ECG monitor, blue light therapeutic instrument, video EEG monitor, bedside ultrasound diagnostic instrument, blood gas analyzer, bedside X-ray radiography, bedside blood purification instrument, transcutaneous bilirubin tester and other advanced equipment.
