The Department of Infectious/Liver Diseases of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an JiaoTong University, the former Hepatobiliary Branch Hospital of the Second Clinical Medical College of Xi'an Medical University in 1990s, was founded in 1962. At present, it is one of the largest treatment centers for patients of liver and other infectious diseases in China. The department is headed by director Dang Shuangsuo professor, deputy director professor Liu Layang and associate professor Jia Xiaoli. The team pays great attention to scientific research, which can significantly improve its development and treatment level. The department currently has 20 professors and associate professors, 8 doctors and 4 postgraduates. There are experienced and conscientious senior professors, as well as middle-aged, energetic, and young physicians with active thinking, broad horizons, and the courage to innovate. We have established close cooperation with the Oxford University. The department is divided into six sub-specialty groups: viral hepatitis group, hepatic fibrosis group, severe liver disease group (cirrhosis with ascites, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, artificial liver), liver tumor and minimally invasive treatment group, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome group, group of non-hepatitis infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases. Advantages and features

The department’s experience and treatment techniques are in the leading position both domestically and internationally. Its development is unique in the following 12 aspects:

1. Individualized and standardized antiviral therapy for viral hepatitis (in international leading position);

2. Blocking of Mother-to-child Transmission of Hepatitis B;

3. Hepatitis B clinical cure project (hepatitis B "hat removal" treatment);

4. Multimode artificial liver for patients with severe liver disease and liver failure (in domestic leading position);

5. Liver biopsy, hepatitis virus genotyping and drug resistance detection technique (in domestic leading position);

6. Minimally invasive treatment of liver tumor (transcatheter arterial chemoembolization/ radiofrequency ablation / hyperthermia);

7. Stem cell therapy for liver diseases (in domestic leading position);

8. Diagnosis and treatment of genetic metabolic liver disease;

9. Diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases of unknown origin;

10. CRRT in the treatment of severe hemorrhagic fever and related multi-organ failure (MOF, MODS) (in domestic leading position);

Scientific research and Education

At present, the department undertakes 9 projects of National Natural Science Foundation, more than 50 projects of National Science Foundation, Ministry of Health Foundation, Shaanxi Science and Technology Research Foundation and Natural Science Foundation, Xi'an Science and Technology Project. We have gained 5 provincial and municipal science and technology progress award, and published 10 monographs. We are the editorial member or disease correspondence review experts for more than 20 domestic and international Periodicals for liver, having 1 patent on hand foot mouth disease, 2 first prizes, 1 second prize and 1 third prize in science and technology achievements.

The department undertakes teaching work of international students, resident standardized training, eight-year, five-year students and others. We have trained more than 50 Ph. D.s and postgraduates. We also participated in compiling teaching materials, including standardized training textbooks for residents Infectious Diseases, postgraduate teaching materials Infectious Diseases and five-year teaching materials Infectious Diseases.

International co-operation

The department have carried out cooperation with Oxford University since 2010, employing professor Dong Tao in Oxford University as the chair professor, sending students and researchers abroad to study and exchange, promoting the academic research level and status of the discipline, and keeping pace with internationally first-class universities.

In recent years, the department sent many doctors to visit internationally renowned universities such as Oxford University, Cardiff University, Stanford University, University of Maryland, and Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated to Harvard Medical School.
