Department of Pathology

1. Introduction

The Department of Pathology was founded in 1937, after the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan in an all-round way, by staff moving from Peiping Medical College to Xi'an. It was the earliest pathology discipline established in Northwest China. Since then, with the development of society, the separation and integration of universities, and the unremitting efforts of generations, the department of pathology has gradually developed and established routine biopsy room, intraoperative rapid frozen section room, cell examination room, immunohistochemistry room, molecular examination room and cell culture room. In 2017, the first Pathology Clinic for Difficult Diseases in Northwest China was opened, extending pathology examination to the front line of service platform.

At present, the pathology department has bloomed into an important clinical and technical department with a history of 80 years, which undertakes the tasks of medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and tumor screening. There are 26 doctors and technicians (including 3 chief physicians, 1 deputy director, 2 deputy chief technicians, among which 3 have doctoral degree, 12 with master degree, 1 doctoral supervisor, 3 master supervisors, and 1 outstanding person in the new century from the Ministry of Education. Many of them hold the posts of deputy chairman, director, standing committee member and member of academic organizations such as China Biomedical Association, China Association of Pathological Associations, Shaanxi Institute of Pathology, Shaanxi Association of Physicians, Shaanxi Association of Anti-cancer, Shaanxi Association of Anti-cancer and Xi'an Society.

2. Featured programs

At present, besides routine pathological examination, rapid frozen section examination, cytopathological examination and other routine examination items, pathology department also carries out the following special examination items:

Special histochemical staining

Full automatic immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, PCR and liquid biopsy techniques were used to detect molecular targets and pathogenic microorganisms associated with individualized tumor therapy and to evaluate drug sensitivity of tumor therapy.

Liquid based cytology, cell block examination and automatic cell DNA content detection.

Difficult biopsy consultation, digital pathological section and remote consultation in difficult clinics.

Individualized pathological diagnosis, in-depth interpretation of reports and other medical services with special needs.

3. Education works:

Responsible for the resident standardized training, pathology trainees and young doctors training for pathology and clinic major. All kinds of pathology training doctors and refresher students are enrolled throughout the year.

4. Scientific research:

In recent years, we have undertaken 4 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, 10 research projects of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Shaanxi Province and Xi'an Scientific Research Foundation. 8 scientific research achievements in provincial and bureaucratic level were obtained. There are 17 patents of invention and utility models, and more than 120 papers have been published. We have also participated in the compilation of 4 academic writings.
