Department of Blood Transfusion
The Blood Transfusion Department of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University is the deputy director unit of Shaanxi Provincial Society of Blood Transfusion. Its main responsibilities include clinical blood transfusion, laboratory diagnosis of neonatal hemolytic disease, and the autoimmune hemolytic counterpart.
The department has 11 staff, among which 1 has senior title, 4 middle-stage titles, and 6 junior titles.
Nowadays, the department has laboratory diagnosis of cross-matching, difficult blood matching, card type blood type & antibody screening, thromboelastography, platelet antibody, prenatal ABO blood group incompatibility, neonatal hemolytic disease and autoimmune hemolytic disease.
During past decades, the department accumulated rich experience in laboratory diagnosis of difficult blood matching, neonatal hemolytic disease and autoimmune hemolytic disease. Every year, it provides about 30,000 units of safe red blood cells, 3 million milliliters of plasma, and 4000 therapeutic doses of platelets for clinical practice. The department undertakes tasks of teaching medical surgical blood transfusion students from Xi'an Jiaotong University and the internship of medicine laboratory specialty interns of the medical colleges in Shaanxi province. As early as in 1970s, our department created “standard matching spectrum cells” and rare blood type identification methods, which made great contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal hemolytic disease and the resolution of difficult blood matching problems. Since 1970, the department has carried out serum antibody monitoring and treatment for hundreds of cases of maternal and child blood group incompatibility. A total of more than 50 cases of neonatal hemolysis in RH system have been exchanged for blood transfusion. It has also attracted many patients from other regions and saved hundreds life of young-patient. The department has won third prize of Shaanxi Science and Technology Progress Award twice and has published dozens of papers.
