Department of Hematology

The Department of Hematology is the only clinical key discipline of hematology in Shaanxi province. It is a national drug clinical trial agency, a qualified unit to carry out allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and collection certificated by National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Childhood Leukemia Collaboration Center of the Ministry of Health, the chairman of Hematologic Tumor Committee of Shaanxi Anti-Cancer Association and Hematology Professional Committee of Shaanxi provincial Academy of Physicians, and the doctorate authorization point of Hematology. Among 23 doctors in the department, 5 are chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians and 2 doctoral supervisors, 17 with doctoral degree, 48 nurses and 6 laboratory technicians. Our Prof. Zhang Wanggang is subsided by special allowance from the State Council.

The Department of Hematology currently has 104 beds, of which 14 are aseptic laminar flow beds. The department mainly focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various acute and chronic hematological diseases. It was the first department to use all-trans retinoic acid in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia, which showed great effect in Northwest China. The clinical application of all-trans retinoic acid, androgen and active vitamin D3 in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome has reached an internationally advanced level. The application of G-HA regimen chemotherapy in refractory and relapsing acute myeloid leukemia has prolonged patient’s survival time, whose achievement was firstly published in an international journal. Since 2000, the department has used a self-designed new chemotherapy regimen in the treatment of malignant lymphomas, thus the 5-year survival rate has been improved significantly. Recently, the department has applied modified “fludarabine + busulfan” conditioning regimen for allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in the treatment of hematological malignancies, which has slight toxicity, high implantation success rate. Most patients achieved clinical cure. We have carried out an innovative conditioning regimen with low recurrence rate and high implantation rate in haploidentical transplantation. What’s more, we have achieved primary success in haploid peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in the treatment of acute leukemia, EBV-associated hemophagocytic syndrome and bone marrow failure. Since 2016, our team have carried out collaborative innovation and made a breakthrough in the treatment of multiple myeloma with the most advanced CAR-T cells immunotherapy in the world, which caused a sensation in medical field and was highly praised by professor Chen Zhu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice chairman of NPC and former minister of Ministry of Health, after his visit here. We were invited to deliver a plenary speech at the ASCO Annual Meeting in the United States and EHA conferences in Europe in 2017, and has attracted lots of Chinese and foreign patients. Our members have been devoted to the study of acute leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and multiple myeloma. They won Scientific and Technological Progress Award in Shaanxi universities twice and 3 second prizes of Scientific and Technological Achievements Award in Shaanxi. The department carries out the detection and sequencing of tumor-related genes and chromosome detection technology firstly in Shaanxi Province, building up a complete MICM system in the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation for leukemia which is in line with the international standards.

The nursing team of the department takes responsibility system for holistic nursing care, fully implementing the “Whole Course Nursing Medical Care” and “Mutual Aid Mode of Health Education”. We are rated as the advanced group of high-quality nursing at hospital-level for 5 years in a row and was rated as the high-quality nursing department in Shaanxi province in 2016.

We always pay attention to the development scientific research and have obtained 16 fund supports from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. They have published more than 100 articles, including over 50 indexed by SCI. We actively participate in international academic communication in the form of posters at ASH Annual Meeting in the US and other academic meetings. The department has been committed to contributing to the development of hematology by training more than 100 graduate students, including more than 30 doctors. We also undertake a number of provincial and school level teaching reform projects and have won 1 second prize of Provincial Teaching Achievement, and many first prizes in the teaching competition in Xi'an Jiaotong University. The department has established scientific research cooperation with many famous foreign universities and research institutes.
