Department of Gastroenterology

The Department of Gastroenterology is a national key clinical specialty discipline, the clinical medical research center of gastrointestinal diseases in Shaanxi Province, the dominant medical discipline in Shaanxi Province, the quality control center of digestive diseases in Shaanxi Province, the gastrointestinal motility disease training center, the demonstration department of quality nursing service in Shaanxi Province, and the national clinical pharmacology base. There are more than 60 medical staff, 7 of which are professors and 6 associate professors. We have 1 director, 3 standing committee members, 3 standing editorial committee members at national level, and 3 chairmen, and 4 vice chairmen, 3 standing committee members, 2 secretaries and 4 members at provincial level. 3 experts enjoy special subsidies from the state council. With strong technical force and reasonable echelon structure, the department has become a national key clinical specialty and advantage discipline suitable for the comprehensive development of medicine, teaching and research.

Medicine: We have digestive specialist clinic, digestive specialty clinic, electronic gastrointestinal endoscopy room, digestive ultrasound room, gastrointestinal motility disease research room, basic laboratory of digestive department and, electrogastric classroom. 100 beds service about 4000 visits per month, around 350 of them are hospitalized. The diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal functional diseases and acidity-related diseases are in a leading position in China. We are the first unit to carry out gastrointestinal dynamic research in China. Since Gastrointestinal Dynamics Laboratory is the only key clinical laboratory in Shaanxi Province, we have organized training courses on gastrointestinal motility (national continuing education project) for 23 in a row. The Digestive Endoscopy Center is one of the largest endoscopy center in Northwest China. It is equipped with magnifying endoscopy, NBI endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography, double-balloon enteroscopy, capsule endoscopy and ultrafine gastroscopy. With these, we can perform esophagogastric varices ligation, sclerosis, tissue glue injection, endoscopic mucosal staining in the diagnosis of early tumors and endoscopic mucosal resection of early cancer, esophageal and pyloric alimentary tract stenosis and dilatation, stent placement, cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic choledocholithotomy, biliary stent placement, endoscopic hemostasis of gastrointestinal bleeding. Also, we conducted difficult endoscopic cardiac suture firstly in Northwest China, for which we have organize training courses on digestive endoscopy (national continuing education project) for 19 years in a row. The clinical and research on chronic liver diseases is well-known in China and Shaanxi, especially the treatment of fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, hepatic hemangioma, esophageal varices ligation and hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis and hypersplenism splenic artery embolization. Besides, we are experienced in interventional treatment of digestive system tumors, portal hypertension, biliary tract diseases and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Scientific research: Main research directions: 1. Gastrointestinal motility disease; 2. Chronic liver disease; 3. Digestive system tumor; 4. Inflammatory bowel disease. In charge of 8 projects of National Natural Science Foundation, 2 Subproject of National Science and Technology Support Program, 4 Clinical Key Subjects Foundation of Ministry of Health, 1 project of Key Teachers Foundation of Ministry of Education, 1 Doctoral Foundation of Ministry of Education, and more than 20 Scientific Research Foundation of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Committee. As a result, we have won the Ministry of Health Science  and Technology Progress Award 4 times, the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award once, and the Shaanxi Science and Technology Progress Award 4 times. Up to now, we edited and co-edited 7 monographs and more than 10 monographs, and published more than 400 papers, including over 100 collected by SCI, earning us 8 national patents.

Teaching: Having postdoctoral mobile station, doctoral degree program and master degree program, 5 doctoral supervisors and 6 master supervisors, we undertake the teaching of diagnostics, internal medicine and evidence-based medicine of the five-year, seven-year and eight-year program students, as well as doctoral students, postgraduate students, refreshers and standardized training students. Now, we have trained 70 doctors and 80 masters. Performing PBL teaching reform firstly in the department of internal medicine, we are in charge of 2 teaching reform projects in Shaanxi Province, 10 teaching reform projects at school and college levels. In this field, we have published more than 20 teaching papers, and won the second prize of the school-level teaching achievement award. We edited 1 digestive monograph and participated in 6 digestive monographs edition. In 2017, we won “Famous Course “of digestive system diseases of Xi'an Jiaotong University.
