The Profile of Pathergasiology & Behavioral Medicine Department
Responding to the development needs, in 1985, professor Yao Kainan with Pediatrics Department commissioned by the university went to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York to study developmental pediatrics and behavioral pediatrics, and he founded Teaching & Research Office on Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics with the university’s approval after his return to China in 1987. The same year, he founded Children Behavioral Disorder Clinic. In 1996, Medical Psychology Department was created as the branch of Maternal and Child Health Department that managed by deputy director Professor Yao Kainan, undertaking the tasks of teaching, medical treatment and scientific research assigned by the hospital. It successively was directed by Professor Yao Kainan, Professor Wang Wenqiang and Professor Yang Yufeng. 10 years later, Pathergasiology & Behavioral Medicine Department was created by the Medical School of XJU and managed by Associate Professor Wang Yaping. Psychoneurosis Department was build up the following year and managed by Associate Professor Wang Yaping.
The department has been offering master degree program since 1987, Professor Yao kainan, Li Gongzhen and Yang Yufeng serving as its master supervisors. Maternal and Child Health Department accomplished the compilations of syllabus and textbooks of Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics in 1992. The department launched 7-year, 5-year and 3-year of college teaching programs around Medical Psychology in the early 1995. Since 2009, the department has been offering doctoral degree program and Professor Wang Yapin serving as its doctoral supervisor.
So far, the department has built up 3 consulting rooms available for clinical teaching with over ten thousand of annual outpatient capacity. There are 4 full-time teachers, 3 of which are lecturers and one is professor, half of them obtaining doctoral degree and the other half obtaining master degree. The department has one doctoral supervisor and one master supervisor.

Teaching Tasks
The department offers teaching programs including 5+3 Integrated Program and Zonglian Experimental Class Program on Pathergasiology, as well as offering postgraduate and PhD education, resident physicians training and incubation of general practitioners.
Achievements
In the recent 10 years, the department has been committed to a educational reform project launched by the hospital and published 2 relative papers, collecting a number of multimedia cases and over 10G of records including video, image and courseware. The director Wang Yaping wins the first prize of Teaching Competition hosted by the hospital and is awarded Excellent Master Supervisor.
Highlights
The bilingual, multi-media teaching method is applied into the theoretical courses, meanwhile, the department constantly explore new teaching methods and ways like PBL and Rain app – a teaching solution to increase the interaction in class. In order to motivate students, to increase their participation and improve teaching efficiency, the student-centered practice classes let students expose to firsthand data and real patients as much as possible and take practices as its fundamental and combine the role-play.
