The Profile of Anesthesiology Department

Anesthesiology, being a clinical subordinate subject, covers clinical anesthesia, monitoring and treatment of critical patient, pain diagnosis and treatment, cardiopulmonary bypass, drug withdrawal, medical education and scientific research, taking monitor and control the basic vital function of patients as its main means. The department is founded by its first director Professor Zhou Xiquan in the 1950’s and attached to the Second Clinical Medical School of XJU, thanking to generations’ efforts and contributions in the last 50 years, it has become one of key clinical units of the hospital. It is a pioneer of medical treatment, education and scientific research in the northwestern China and even the whole country, being selected as National Important Department and Shaanxi Competitive Department, as well as serving as training bases of pediatric anesthesia and geriatric anesthesia of CMA. In addition, it is national clinical pharmacology base and the chair of Shaanxi Society of Anesthesiologists.

So far, the department has two main clinical teaching units: surgical anesthesia and Pain Clinic with 24 operating rooms and 15 beds for teaching. It has 6 professors and is equipped with one doctoral supervisor and 3 master supervisors.

Teaching Task

The department has been offering teaching programs including 5-year Program, 5+3 Integrated Program and Zonglian Experimental Class Program on Surgery, as well as offering The department offers teaching programs including 5-year Program, 5+3 Integrated Program, Zonglian Experimental Class Program and Educational Reform Class Program on Clinical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine, as well as offering master and doctoral education, resident physicians training, further education for visiting physicians and incubation of general practitioners.

Achievements

The department divides Clinical Anesthesiology into different groups including Pediatric group, Airway group and geriatric group to teach and study, which is more convenient for junior anesthetist and postgraduates to learn and research. The department has been approved to be training base of pediatric anesthesia in 2018, now it intends to apply to become research center and QC center of pediatric anesthesia to provide a bigger platform for anesthesiology research and teaching.

Highlights

The bilingual, multi-media teaching method is applied into the theoretical courses, and the department focuses on interaction in class. In addition, it implements QC system and teacher training plan made by its teaching & research office and adopts different teaching styles like the standardized and the scenario simulation, encouraging young teachers to participate in academic forums and competitions to enrich their practical experiences. Meanwhile, the department values knowledge exchange and learning from overseas competitors and experts to capture the newest teaching concepts and the latest course content. The student-centered and practice-based classes adopts diversified teaching mode, teacher-student responsibility system and workshop mode, exposing students to real surgical anesthesia cases as much as possible, which also values the evaluation from students.
