Department of Geriatric II (Geriatric Cardiology)
The Department of Geriatric II (cardiovasology for elders) was established in 1985 and has been responsible for the prevention, health care and disease diagnosis and treatment for retired cadres under the leadership of the Shaanxi Provincial Health Care Bureau and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University for a long time. Cardiovasology for elders is one of the specialties of Internal Medicine, mainly taking care of patients of cardiovascular diseases and their complications, as well as related diseases in elderly people. It also undertakes the medical and health care tasks of incumbent and retired cadres at all levels, and teaching and scientific research tasks of geriatrics. There are 40 standard beds and 20 additional ones, distributed in 6 single-bed rooms, 6 double-bed rooms, 6 triple-bed rooms and one ordinary room. It has an academic team composed of 13 physicians, 16 nurses, 6 supervising nurses and 1 supervising technician. The physician team includes 1 chief physician, 3 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, and 4 resident physicians. It has a large number of valuable medical equipment, including 2 Philips bedside monitors, 1 new type ECG monitor and 1 central ECG multi-parameter monitoring system from GE Company, 1 defibrillator from HP Company, 2 electrocardiograph machines, 10 microcomputer infusion pumps, 2 injection pumps, 10 ambulatory blood pressure monitors, 10 ambulatory ECG monitors, 17 dynamic electrocardiograph detectors, 1 blood glucose detector, 1 blood gas analyzer, 1 automatic bioluminescence detector, and 1 non-invasive heart function detector.
It has been 32 years since the establishment of the department. Through efforts and innovation of all employees, it has formed an academic research and teaching team with distinctive characteristics and rapid and efficient diagnosis and treatment system for cardiovascular disease. At present, China is facing the problem of aging, and elders are prone to get a variety of diseases, whose treatment is complicated. Based on the diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases, our department is mainly engaged in treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and is good at treating various elderly internal medical diseases, including coronary atherosclerotic cardiopathy, hypertension, heart failure caused by various causes, arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, infective endocarditis and so on. Now we are in the leading position in the Northwest China in treatment, teaching and scientific research of cardiovascular diseases in the elders, especially in the diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction, hypertension, heart failure and arrhythmia. We have also accumulated rich experience and made remarkable achievements.
In close cooperation with relevant departments in the hospital, the department has hospitalized nearly 2,000 patients in the past 4 years. Interventional therapy for coronary atherosclerotic cardiopathy and cardiac pacemaker placement have been carried out for hundreds of elderly patients. Interventional therapy for acute myocardial infarction can be completed in time and efficiently. Evaluation of multiple indicators of cardiac function in the elderly has been widely used in clinical practice.
The department has published more than 50 papers on cardiovascular diseases, including some indexed by SCI, and participated in the compilation of 10 medical monographs, and undertook a number of provincial-level scientific and technological research projects. In the past five years, it has also undertaken theoretical teaching, intern training, and standardized training of 5-year and 7-year students from internal medicine, diagnostics, and geriatrics.
In aspect of clinical, scientific research and teaching, our department has been growing steadily and is striding towards a new era.
