The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic diseases of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, established in late 1970s, is one of the earliest endocrinology specialties in Shaanxi province. It was the first master degree authorization center of XJTU. The department has a strong technical force. Its academic pilots and technological backbones are appointed as chairmen and vice chairmen of Shaanxi Endocrine Society of Chinese Medical Association, the chairman of Shaanxi Diabetes Society of Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association, the director of Shaanxi branch of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association, etc. Technological backbones service in national endocrine and diabetes academic organizations. In 2006, it was pointed as the vice-chairmen of Shaanxi Endocrine Disease Quality Control Center. The department has been approved as the state key clinical department of Endemic Diseases and Iodine-related Diseases.
Through efforts of several generations, the department of endocrinology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University achieved the leading position in medicine, teaching, scientific research and other aspects, enjoying certain reputation in this field in China. Key physicians and nursing staff have been dispatched to learn advanced diagnosis and treatment techniques in endocrinology and metabolic diseases both domestically and abroad, forming a great academic and clinical team.
The department has rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, thyroid, adrenal, hypothalamus and pituitary diseases. It is equipped with advanced treatment instruments such as dynamic blood glucose monitor, insulin pump, non-mydriatic fundus camera, percutaneous oxygen partial pressure tester etc. With professional nursing team, the department can provide targeted nursing and relevant life guidance to endocrine patients, and cooperate with physicians to complete various professional examinations and treatment. We are also experienced in treatment of diabetic neurogenic bladder disease (urinary retention). The research achievements of combined implantation of fetal parathyroid gland and pancreas in the treatment of type 1 diabetes have won National Science and Technology Progress Award and Shaanxi Science Award. The department was the first to utilize autologous stem cell transplantation technology to treat diabetic foot in Shaanxi province. In addition to its advanced level in the diagnosis and treatment of common diseases such as diabetes and its complications, thyroid, the department has made great efforts to treat rare and difficult diseases such as secondary hypertension, parathyroid disease, children's growth and development obstacle, calcium phosphorus metabolism disorder, insulin resistance syndrome, thyroid hormone insulin insensitivity syndrome, multiple endocrine gland disease, autoimmune syndromes at the same time. It also provides outpatient service for patients of diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity and hyperuricemia , earning them a good reputation.
The department has been taking the teaching tasks for undergraduates, postgraduates and overseas students of the medical college of Xi’an Jiaotong University, as well as the training tasks for endocrinologists and general practitioners of primary hospitals in Northwest China. Due to our strong teaching ability, we gained numerous first prizes in university-level teaching competitions and other awards. We also conducted several national continuing education courses for diabetes medicine successfully, and trained hundreds of professional and technical talents in this field in Northwest China. Dozens of graduate students have been trained.
The department undertakes a number of national scientific and technological research projects in the 9th, 10th and 11th five-year plan, and received natural science funds in provincial, municipal, and university level.
With 4 professors, 3 associate professors and 4 doctors, all young and middle-aged doctors in our department have master's or doctor's degree.
