1. Personnel composition:
There are 17 doctors, 25 nurses and 3 paramedical personnel in our department. Among 17 doctors, 3 are professors, 8 associate professors, 14 people with doctoral degree, and 2 with master degree. All the nurses have college degrees or above.
2. Medical characteristics
Our department is characterized by treatment of joint disease and periarticular trauma. We performed the first artificial joint replacement in Northwest China. Since 1970s, our department did a series of research on the pathogenesis and clinical treatment of femoral head necrosis, and drew up systemic and individualized treatment plans according to different clinical conditions. Following the internationally acknowledged principle of joint preserving therapy for femoral head necrosis, we took the lead in autologous bone marrow stromal stem cell transplantation combined with different types of scaffolds for the treatment of femoral head necrosis with the method of core decompression with bone grafts and subsidence zone bracing technology in China. The method, with the characteristics of minimal invasion and good curative effects, is expected to be the optimal treatment for the early femoral head necrosis. We also firstly applied vascularized fibula graft in the treatment of mid-term femoral head necrosis in China, which showed excellent effects. Our department promoted this kind of operation and made it the classical surgery for femoral head necrosis. With the rapid development of multidiscipline and bone tissue engineering, our department combined tissue engineering principles with rapid prototyping bio-fabrication techniques to build a transplantable vascularized tissue engineering bone graft, providing new treatment for femoral head necrosis. Currently, our department embarks on the efficiency analysis of vascularized bone material construction effects.
In recent years, our department have performed complex artificial joint replacements such as congenital hip dysplasia and ankylosing spondylitis. Existing artificial joint types cannot meet the surgical requirements because primary disease will change the bone morphology around the prosthesis, for which we have carried out preliminary exploration in rapid prototyping bio-fabrication techniques and have conducted correlated animal experiments as well as clinical application studies on individualized prosthesis design and manufacturing. With the increase of artificial joint replacement failure, the research on artificial joint revision is urgent. The department have begun basic research on artificial joint loosening, collection and analysis of clinical cases, which have achieved preliminary success.
In order to solve various joint diseases caused by sports injury and aging, we have carried out various diagnostic and therapeutic work by arthroscopy. We have completely mastered difficult surgeries including ligament repair, meniscus repair, articular cartilage transplantation, etc.
In the treatment of periarticular fracture, our department performed various minimally invasive internal fixation surgeries through the latest technologies in trauma orthopedics, thus provide patients with an opportunity of rapid recovery.
In the past 10 years, we obtained more than 20 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and participated in 5 projects supported by National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), National High-tech Research and Development Program (863 Program), the 10th Five-Year Plan and the 11th Five-Year Plan. Likewise we have been honored with 2 second prizes of the Science and Technology Advancement Award of Shaanxi Province and published more than 50 SCI papers in the last decade.
With unremitting efforts of several generations, this discipline has become a nationwide recognized basic research center for femoral head necrosis and artificial joint surgery center. Currently, The First Department of Orthopedics of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is the chairman unit of Joint Surgery Committee of Chinese Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the candidate chairman unit of Chinese Orthopaedic Association and the chairman unit of Joint Surgery of Shaanxi Province.
