The Profile of Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery Department
The otolaryngology teaching-research office was set up in 1938 and has been managed one after another by the otolaryngology expert - Professor Yang Qichang, the president of the hospital professor Wang Lichu and the dean of Provincial Medical College professor Zhang Naihua. The department has been developed rapidly and in the leading academic position in the northwest region, even the entire country. Meanwhile, the department has helped many hospitals in northwest region to set up their own otolaryngology departments. The department has trained up a large number of professional physicians serving for the northwest region and whole country since it was appointed as national training base by the ministry of health in 1981. It was renamed as otolaryngology & head and neck surgery department in 2008 and the specialized hospital of otolaryngology & head and neck surgery founded in 2011. Now, it has built up 3 inpatient areas available for clinical education with 87 beds and 100 thousands of outpatients and emergency capacity. There are 31 full-time teachers, 6 professors, 9 associate professors, 16 lecturers and 1 teaching assistant, 18 of which hold doctor degree, and 10 of them hold master degrees. It has 5 doctoral supervisors and 3 master’s supervisors.

Teaching Tasks
The department offers teaching programs such as 5-year Program, 5+3 Integrated Program and Zonglian Experimental Class Program on Clinical Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, also offers postgraduate and PhD education, resident physicians training, further education for visiting physicians and incubation of general practitioners.
Achievements
The courses offered by the department was assessed as Excellent Course of Shaanxi Province. The department has compiled 6 professional publications and been involved in 3 of Ministry of Health-compiled textbooks compilation. In addition, it has trained and provided a large number of excellent talents for local hospitals including 80+ postgraduates and 12 doctors, providing 20+ physician with further education annually. The department is committed to 7 national continuing education projects and 6 provincial continuing education projects. Many of its teachers win various titles like Excellent Teacher, Excellent Graduate Teacher, Excellent Teaching Secretary and Excellent Teaching Assistant and awards such as the third prize in the Teaching Competition of Xi 'an Jiaotong University (XJU), the first prize of the 2nd PBL Teaching Plan Competition of XJU, third prize of the 3rd Flipped Teaching Competition of XJU, first prize of English Teaching Competition among middle & young aged teachers and second prize of Provincial Online Video Teaching Competition. In the recent 5 years, nearly 20 teaching papers are published, 6 of which are around PBL and CBL.
Highlights
The bilingual, multi-media teaching method is applied into the theoretical courses, meanwhile, the department stays focus on interaction in class, PBL study, CBL, flipped classroom and online video teaching. Based on its own unique features, the department brings MDT into clinical teaching, paying attention to developing practical ability and mindset. The department implements tutorial system in the teaching and has been trained the largest number of visiting students in its kind in the whole province.
