The Department of Geriatric IV (the Fourth Ward of Department of General Surgery) was established in 1985. Only taking the task of cadre healthcare initially, the department is now available for all patients in order to meet patient’s need. Our focuses are hepatobiliary, pancreatic and gastrointestinal tumor surgery. We undertake the work in general surgery, including medical treatment, teaching and scientific research. Now, we have 39 authorized beds and 49 available beds. In 2011, our department was awarded the title of “The Innovation Team” by the Ministry of Education, and in 2014, “Hepatosplenology Clinical Medical Research Center of Shaanxi”.

Teams

The director of the department is Dr. Yang zhengan, and the academic leader is professor Li zongfang. At present, there are 12 doctors and 20 nurses in our department, among which 7 have senior titles, 5 junior and intermediate titles, 1 doctoral supervisor, 5 master supervisors, and 9 physicians with doctoral degree. Many of them hold important positions in academic groups at all levels and serve as deputy editors or editors in more than 10 national journals. Right now, we have nearly 30 candidates for doctor and master degree.

Medical characteristics

The department has formed its own characteristics in the surgical treatment of portal hypertension, the comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors, the comprehensive treatment of acute pancreatitis and the minimally invasive surgical treatment of general surgery disease. We are the first one to perform operations of laparoscopic splenectomy and pericardial devascularization, laparoscopic hepatosplenectomy, laparoscopic radical gastrectomy and laparoscopic radical colon cancer surgery. Among them, “linear stapler pericardial devascularization” and “silk thread chronic embolization of the right gastroepiploic artery” in the treatment of portal hypertension with cirrhosis were initiated and firstly applied in clinical practice by professor Li zongfang, our academic leader. In 2014, Shaanxi Health and Family Planning Commission approved the establishment of “Hepatosplenology Clinical Medical Research Center of Shaanxi”. It established a unified pathway for diagnosis and treatment, improving the treatment of portal hypertension with cirrhosis.

Scientific Research

Our department has formed its own advantages and features in treatment of portal hypertension and hypersplenism with cirrhosis, tumor invasion and metastasis, TCM application in treatment of general surgery diseases, and the comprehensive treatment of acute pancreatitis. We are the chairman of the surgery branch of Chinese Medical Association in Xi’an, having 1 member of International Hepatobiliary Association, 1 member of the Surgical Society of Chinese Medical Association, and many people serving as the chairman or vice chairman in provincial associations. We are the deputy chief editor of two journals in Chinese Medical Association and the editor of more than 10 kinds of core journals. In recent years, the department has won more than 10 scientific research achievements awards at provincial and ministerial-level, and hosted and participated in more than 50 projects of“973”, “Science And Technology Support Plan”, National Natural Science Foundations, Ministry Of Education Foundations and Shaanxi Provincial Scientific Research Foundations. We have published more than 300 academic papers, among which more than 100 were indexed by SCI, and has edited or translated more than 30 books, obtaining more than 10 patents. We also won the first prize of Shaanxi Science and Technology Progress Award in comprehensive treatment of liver cancer.

Education work

Our department is responsible for the training of undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral and advanced students in surgery, geriatrics, nursing practice and others. More than 60 postgraduates and doctoral students have graduated, and become the backbones of healthcare organizations across the country.
