The Core Research Laboratory
The Core Research Laboratory was founded in 2008 to provide a public experimental platform for the researchers. The core idea of the laboratory is “to inspire innovation and achieve highly competitive academic level through open and cooperative research”. The laboratory dedicates to serve all the disciplines and to further improve the scientific level of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University.
The lab is a young and energetic department of 24 staff members: six with advanced and 10 with intermediate academic posts. Ninety-six percent of personnel hold a PhD or a master’s degree. In addition, the lab has 13 guest professors, including eight national or provincial high-level talents and five internationally-recognized professors. Our research mainly focuses on: portal hypertension and spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas; tumor invasion and prevention; gene analysis of cochlea hair cell regeneration; the regulation of complement on immunocytes; the role of complement in urinary system infections. Our Lab researchers were awarded numerous research grants and have received various funding, including 25 National Natural Science Foundation of China grants, one major project from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, one program for Changjiang scholar and Innovative Research Team from the Ministry of Education, 14 funds from the Ministry of Education, 2 funds from the health and family planning commission of China, 14 provincial and municipal funds, 18 funds from Xi’an Jiaotong University.
The Lab takes up 500 m2 of space devoted to offices and laboratories. The lab area includes cell culture lab, molecular biology lab, immunohistology lab, precise instrument room, reagent preparation room, autoclave washroom and specimen storage room. The facilities in the Core Research Lab can support various experiments, including cell culture, flow cytometry analysis, cell sorting, molecular cloning, immunohistochemistry. Moreover, center will use an extra 1700 m2 in Shengyuan square to further improve the research conditions for scientists in our hospital.
The lab is well equipped with flow cytometer (BD FACS Calibur) and sorter (BD FACS Aria II), magnetic-activated cell sorting system, Leica SP8 confocal laser scanning microscope, fluorescent inverted microscope, small animal in vivo imaging system, two-dimentional gel electrophoresis system, real-time quantitative PCR, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, microplate spectrophotometer, gel imaging system, sledge microtome, cryomicrotome and pathology slide scanner, CO2 incubator, ultra-low temperature freezers, high-speed refrigerated centrifuge, AKTA medium-pressure protein purification system and bacteria shakers.
In the next five years, the Lab will strengthen the training and development of research scientists and strive to better the experimental platform for the researchers to promote key disciplines of our hospital. Moreover, we will strengthen the interdisciplinary and cooperative research and recruit more excellent scientists, especially the academic leaders who are able to promote and accelerate development of our department. We will strive to become Key Laboratory of Shaanxi Province one day earlier.
