Department of Nephrology
Established in 1995, the Department of Nephrology has six major parts: Specialist Out-patient Nepropathy Clinic, Nephropathy Ward, Severe Kidney Disease Ward, Hemodialysis Center, Peritoneal Dialysis Center，and Kidney Pathology Laboratory. The Department has become a professional centre, integrating medical teaching, scientific research and preventive health care. With solid technical and professional strength in aspects of medical care, teaching and scientific research, the department has been a leading center among the 5 northwestern provinces especially in the treatment of severally ill patients.
The Department consists of 81 medical staff, including 21 doctors. The proportion of the doctors with postgraduate or Ph.D. degree is above 85%, with 14 doctorates and 4 masters. It has implemented a system which allows patients to select doctors or nurses. This provides a full-course nursing service with high quality. It has 63 beds in nephropathy wards and 7 beds for intensive care. Additionally, it possesses complete facilities such as advanced bedside monitoring, medical emergency code system, blood purification equipment and advanced blood purification techniques such as dual plasma exchange and immune absorption, with the latter playing an essential role in the treatment of severely ill patients.
In the medical field, the department is characterized by diagnosing and treating severe complicated kidney diseases and by halting the progress of chronic kidney disease. The diagnosis and treatment scope of the department covers primary and secondary glomerular diseases, acute and chronic urinary tract infections, acute and chronic renal failure with various causes and hereditary kidney diseases. Implementation of clinical pathways plays a critical role in improving the curative effect of common diseases. For example, acute and chronic glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, chronic pyelonephritis, allergic purpuric nephritis, lupus nephritis, hypertensive renal damage, IgA nephropathy, renal cysts and polycystic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, chronic kidney disease. Also, rare diseases such as renal amyloidosis, multiple myeloma renal damage and vasculitis.
Following the international development direction, we have established an administrative system to manage patients via mobile APP. This is the first APP of its kind in China. We have also developed specialized clinic, lifelong follow-up and characteristic treatment for IgA nephropathy, membranous nephropathy, lupus nephritis and pregnant woman with hematuria. The citrate anticoagulant technology first applied by us to treat patients with high-risk bleeding has made significant progress, especially in the treatment of patients with multiple organ failure, SIRS, crush syndrome, severe electrolyte imbalance, as well as in cirrhosis patients with a large amount of ascites, newborn or premature infant with multiple organ failure. It greatly improved the survival rate of patients.
Established for more than 20 years, the Hemodialysis Center has conducted many projects, such as hemodialysis, on-line hemodiafiltration, plasma exchange, blood perfusion, pure ultrafiltration, and continuous bedside hemofiltration, with strict quality control and standardized management. The center is administrated by doctors and nurses in a one-to-one pattern, enabling hemodialysis patients to get more individualized treatments and precise services.
The Nephropathy Pathology Laboratory serves as a clinical, teaching, and scientific research center of nephrology. It is part of Urinary System Disease Institute of Precision Medicine of Xi’an Jiaotong University. The laboratory has 5 clinical pathologists and technicians and has sophisticated experimental and testing equipment. Renal immunofluorescence pathological techniques such as Kappa、Lanbda、PLA2R、IgG1-4、Congo red combined with light microscopy, electron microscopy, and hepatitis B marker examination enable us to diagnose complicated rare kidney disease, especially in multiple myeloma, renal amyloidosis, lipoprotein nephropathy, light chain deposition disease. Thus the diagnosis rate of common diseases such as primary and secondary glomerular diseases and unexplained acute renal failure will be more accurate and be improved significantly. Furthermore, the urinary sediment red blood cell morphology test and renal tubular function test can also be performed to improve the treatment.
In teaching and research, we currently have 9 professors and associate professors, 2 doctoral supervisors. This ensures us as an important part of internal medicine teaching in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University. Introducing consistently advanced foreign teaching ideas, we actively carry out the teaching reform of medical students over their 8-year study.
The Nephrology Department is the base for a number of areas such as standard training for specialists in Shaanxi province, for talented doctors of kidney disease at county level and the National Hemodialysis Training Center. Every year we send potential doctors to study abroad for advanced experience in order to improve our teaching ability. We have established collaborations with Yale University in the USA, Monash University in Australia and with the Central Hospital in Singapore with regard to polycystic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy and peritoneal dialysis, for which our director is well informed about the international development orientation of kidney disease treatment. In the last decade, the department has received 10 grants above ministerial level, 2 first prizes and 1 second prize of Shaanxi province and has published more than 200 research papers in English or Chinese.
The Nephrology Department in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Urinary System Disease Institute of Xi’an Jiaotong University, has become the kidney disease clinical & basic research center in nephrology field of Northwest China. It has also become the professional base for educating excellent and high-standard academic backbones.
