Department of Ophthalmology

Founded in 1938, the Department of Ophthalmology of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University has developed into a first-class discipline with national advanced clinic medicine, research and teaching level. The department was authorized to be one of the first research divisions in Shaanxi province in 1963, the master degree awarding station in 1986, the national clinical pharmacy base of ophthalmology in 1998, key discipline of Shaanxi province in 2004. These achievements originate from the joint effort of leaders of several generation, including Professor Xinming Liu, Professor Qingkui Chen, Professor Shoujing Wang, Professor Aiqing Wang, Professor Qi Zang, Professor Naixue Sun and Professor Quanchen Xiong.

The department has advanced technology for clinical care. It initiated keratoplasty in China, and it is the first one applies UBM in Northwest china. It has developed the early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, vitrectomy for vitreoretinopathy, repairation of ocular trauma combine with vitrectomy for extraction of intraocular foreign bodies, phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation, lacrimal duct intubation and stent implantation, treatment of neonatal dacryocystitis, surgery of complex strabismus, treatment of ametropia and amblyopia, surgery of ocular neoplasms and orbitopathy, ophthalmic orthopedics and cosmetology, therapy of diabetic retinopathy and treatment of macular disease.

The department has advanced equipment such as 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy system, INFINITI cataract phacoemulsification apparatus, Zeiss operation microscope, Humphrey perimetry, Multi-wavelength Laser Unit, YAG anterior segment laser unit, Lacrimal laser instrument, OCT, RETI scan 3.15 version, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope HRA2, A/B Ultrasound examination, Corneal topography, Specular microscope and Phoropter.

Currently there are 57 members in the department, including 22 ophthalmologists, 26 nurses and 9 technicians. Among them, 11 physicians have senior titles, 10 have doctoral degree, 1 doctor supervisor, 4 master supervisors, and 5 have study experience in USA, Japan and Germany. In the aspect of teaching, the department undertakes 5/7/8-year teaching programs of clinical medicine, and has educated 70 masters and 13 doctors. Experts in the department participate in and lead the work of Chinese Ophthalmological Society, Ophthalmological Society of Shaanxi, and Ophthalmological Society of Xi`an, and are associate editors for International Journal of Ophthalmology, Chinese Journal of Child Health Care and Journal of Southern Medical University. Our physicians also have edited more than 20 academic books. Researches in the department was supported by more than 30 funds from NSFC and Shaanxi province. It has obtained 3 national patents, 5 utility model patents and won 4 Provincial Science and Technology Award.
