Department of Oncology
Formerly known as Surgical Oncology, which was founded in 1979, the Department of Oncology is one of the earliest oncology specialists in Northwest China and was established in 2011 to the develop oncology. After joint efforts of generations, the Department of Oncology integrated tumor surgery, oncology, and tumor radiotherapy effectively. With the idea of “multidisciplinary collaboration and one-stop service” and its rich experience in multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors, it has grown into a comprehensive cancer treatment center including tumor surgery, radiation, internal medicine, targeted biology, immunotherapy and other treatment approaches.
At present, the department has oncology department and radiation oncology department. It has 120 beds, with about 10,000 visits per year. There are 9 professors, 13 associate professors, and 15 middle-grade professional titles and 15 doctors.
In medical field, their treatments mainly include internal, surgical and radiotherapeutic parts. Surgical: The hospital adheres to the principle of standardized treatment. It actively carries out surgical treatment for common benign and malignant tumors, and other tumors such as tumor indigestive tract, thyroid cancer and breast cancer, which seriously endanger human life and health, to provide patients with longer survival time, higher life quality. The application of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for post-operation esophageal cancer and rectal cancer, breast cancer sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast conserving surgery, and minimally invasive surgery patients have formed our own characteristics, especially breast cancer, whose survival rate has reached a high level in China. We perform over 1,000 operations for breast cancer annually, with breast-conserving rate of 40%. For patients who are unable to conserve breasts, breast reconstruction is performed with individualized treatment plans. Internal: The hospital adheres to the principle of comprehensive treatment which includes chemotherapy, biological therapy, endocrine therapy, and physical therapy, to finish neoadjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant chemotherapy, palliative chemotherapy, radical chemotherapy, and high-dose chemotherapy. We are clinically experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of various malignant tumors, especially in the treatment of advanced tumor complications and toxic side effects. In early 2013, a model ward for standardized treatment of cancer pain was created. Radiotherapeutic: The department is equipped with 2 imported medical electronic linear accelerators, 1 spiral CT simulation positioning machine, 1 X-ray stereotactic treatment system (X-knife), 3 sets of multi-leaf collimator (MLC), 2 sets of inverse treatment planning systems (TPS), and a complete dose measurement and treatment plan validation system. All these guarantees us to perform 3D conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic X-knife, respiratory-gated assisted radiation therapy, volumetric rotational intensity modulated radiation therapy (Rapid-Arc) and other technologies.
In terms of teaching, the department pays attention to the teaching and training of clinical specialists. It is an awarding site for bachelor, master, and Ph. D degree of oncology. It has one first-class oncology team in China, undertaking teaching work for five-year reform, eight-year ancestral class, and standardized training. It is one of our features now to hold forum for standardized training students and postgraduates every Tuesday. We have developed a complete teaching plan and training program for oncology and have unified plan for postgraduate research and their clinical practice. At present, more than 20 students with doctoral and master degree have been trained.
In terms of scientific research, based on our clinic-oriented principle, our department focuses on studies on pathogenesis, biological characteristics, metastasis mechanism, drug resistance and reversal, target research and detection, radiobiology and other related research of malignant tumors such as breast cancer. We have participated in over 10 multi-center large-scale clinical research both domestically and internationally, and won more than 10 provincial scientific research awards, over 30 provincial-level research funds from National Natural Science Foundation. The department has published more than 300 academic papers (over 100 indexed by SCI) and co-edited 7 academic monographs and won 9 national patents of invention.
Our department is striding forward directed by our leaders. With the “three high principles” (high standards, high starting point and high requirements), we aim to establish a department with “famous doctors, strong ability, and well-known disciplines”. We will spare no effort to become a first-class discipline in China by discipline refining and specializing, technique globalization and innovation, and versatile physician training.
