Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University was established in early 1960s. With the trinity of medical treatment, teaching and research, the department was authorized to confer doctoral degree and master degree. Now, it is staffed by 45 people, including 19 doctors, 22 nurses and 4 technicians. Among them, 3 are chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, 2 doctoral supervisors and 2 master supervisors.
There are 60 beds serving about 3000 inpatients and 3 specialist outpatient clinics serving almost 50000 outpatients each year. The Department of Neurology is committed to provide the highest quality health care to patients with neurological diseases, including cerebrovascular disease, central nervous system infectious disease, demyelinating disease, myelopathy, dyssomnia, peripheral neuropathy, epilepsy, headache, dementia, Parkinson disease, myasthenia gravis, myopathy, motor neuron disease, porphyria, autoimmune encephalitis, etc. Our department is fully equipped with the latest and advanced medical devices to ensure specific and accurate electroencephalogram examinations, electromyography examinations and transcranial doppler ultrasound examinations.
The Department of Neurology, as the first qualified unit of interventional therapy, becomes the leader of intervention group in Shaanxi Province Neurology Branch of Chinese Medical Association. Not only interventional therapy, our botox treatment and other new techniques are tops in China. In the past 10 years, our women team, nicknamed the Iron Roses, has performed digital subtraction angiography of the brain and the spinal cord for nearly 1000 patients and percutaneous transluminal stent placement or mechanical recanalization for over 100 patients with intracranial and extracranial cerebral arterial stenosis annually. Additionally, thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy have also been performed in patients with acute ischemic stroke or cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Specifically, we first carried out mechanical thrombectomy for patients with acute ischemic stroke in Shaanxi Province as early as 2012, which was recommended as the most effective treatment for patients with acute ischemic stroke globally in 2015.
Our department, which is entitled the training and reeducation base for neurology professionals, undertakes the clinical teaching and standardized training of undergraduate students, postgraduate students, advanced students and resident doctors. Particularly, the undergraduate course named “Neurology” has been awarded the outstanding course of Xi’an Jiaotong University. One expert was appointed as an editorial board member of neurology textbook by People’s Medical Publishing House, and one was honored with Xi’an Jiaotong University “Wang Kuancheng Yucai Award” and many instructors have won the prizes in Teaching Skills Competition of Xi’an Jiaotong University. Moreover, more than 10 teaching reform projects have been completed and at least 30 teaching papers have been published.
Besides the clinical and teaching works, we also pay attention to the important roles of scientific research and academic communication in the development of our discipline. We have completed more than 40 scientific research projects, and have won 3 awards for Scientific and Technological Progress Granted by Shaanxi Province. In addition, we also have obtained one national patent. By the end of 2017, we had published 7 monographs and over 300 research papers, 40 of which had been included in SCI. Many of us have made good academic presentations in national and international conferences more than once. And some of us have held important positions in local, provincial and national academic institutions. Furthermore, the Seminar of Interventional Therapy in Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease has been successfully held for five times, which greatly promotes the progression of interventional diagnosis and treatment in Shaanxi Province and even the northwest part of China.
