The Department of urology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the earliest urology specialized department established in Northwest China. As a national key discipline, a post-doctoral mobile station, an awarding point of doctoral and master degree, the national drug clinical trial base, Shaanxi urology clinical research sub-center and Shaanxi urology quality control center, it has developed into an integrated department of medical, teaching, research, a well-known urological center in China and the leading urological center in Northwest. At present, the department of urology has 66 urologists, nurses and scientific researchers, including 6 professors, 9 associate professors, 3 doctoral supervisors and 8 master supervisors. It is currently the chairman unit of the Shaanxi Society of Urology of the Chinese Medical Association and the deputy director unit of the Shaanxi Male Science Society of the Chinese Medical Association. The department has strong technical forces and advanced medical equipment. It has two wards currently, with 106 ward beds actually set. The annual outpatient visits are more than 50,000, and more than 3,000 patients are admitted and treated with operation and/or procedures. It ranks high in China in the areas of basic research and clinical diagnosis/treatment of tumors, stones, deformities in male urinary and reproductive system, and urinary control, urethral stricture, adrenal diseases, prostate diseases, and male diseases. Especially excellent in the application, research and promotion of intra-cavitary and minimally invasive techniques, the ratio of minimally invasive surgeries has reached 80% for five consecutive years. In 1984, in the leading place, it performed tract endoscopy surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate and transurethral resection of the bladder tumor in the northwest region. Within Shannxi province, it performed ureteroscopy firstly in 1986, urinary laparoscopic surgery in 2002, and percutaneous kidney surgery in 2004. The number and quality of operations rank high in the Northwest. At present, laparoscopic adrenalectomy, radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, radical prostatectomy and radical cystectomy have all become routine operations. In particular, the number of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, the surgery which represents the professional level in urology, is more than 50 cases per year, which is in the leading position in Northwest China. National and international advanced technology such as TVT and Interstim sacral neuromodulation have been utilized in neurourology. At present, the number and quality of Interstim sacral neuromodulation takes the first place in the Northwest China. It is a founding member of the Chinese Nerve Alliance, and it established the first sacral neuromodulation program control center in China. Every year, the department will hold a number of academic conferences such as Shaanxi Provincial Medical Association Urology Annual Meeting, and will operate two national “advanced training courses for urological endoscopic techniques”, whose participants come from five northwestern provinces as well as Shanxi, Henan, Inner Mongolia, Hubei, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guangxi. These courses have made great contributions to the progress of urinary minimally invasive intraluminal techniques in the central and western regions of China. In terms of academic research, it has a solid foundation in the field of the basic and applied research of urological tumor, urethral stricture and male reproductive health. At present, it is responsible for 15 National Natural Science Foundation projects and key provincial and ministerial research projects. It has published more than 200 papers in professional journals, both domestically and abroad, and edited and participated in the preparation of 8 monographs. Because of abundant scientific research achievements, our discipline has certain academic influence in China. The department has many staff serve as members of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Men's Science Association, members and youth committee members of the Chinese Society of Urology, and editors of more than 10 domestic core journals.
