Department of pediatric surgery

As one of the most prestigious pediatric surgery centers and specialist training bases in China, the Pediatric Surgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University was founded in 1958 by Professor Xiuzhong Wang, who was one of the founders for Pediatric Surgery in China. After 21-year hard working, our department became the first Master degree authorization site of Pediatric Surgery approved by the State Council in 1979. Since then, our department has been at the leading edge both in China and abroad in diagnosis and treatment of various pediatric surgical diseases such as liver tumors, congenital pulmonary cystic diseases, portal hypertension, hemangioma and vascular malformations, pectus excavatum, biliary tract diseases and anorectal malformations, etc. Researchers in our department have fully participated in high-level scientific research, completing more than 10 nation-level projects and published more than 20 high-level international papers. We also serve as Shaanxi Children's Surgical Disease Clinical Research Center and Shaanxi Pediatric Surgical Quality Control Center.

Aiming at minimally invasive procedures, accurate diagnosis and personal treatment, we perform averagely more than 3000 operations, including 300 neonatal operations, per year, among which 80% are minimally invasive ones, keeping up with the international standards.

There are more than 40 professional medical staff, including 3 professors and 7 associate professors, focusing on the following 6 main fields: general surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, hemangioma vascular malformation, oncology and neonatology.

General Surgery

The department leads national and international development by its multiple techniques. From internal and external pancreatic cyst drainage in stage one, gastric coronary vein embolization + autologous spleen transplantation previously, to accurate procedures to treat Hirschsprung disease and other complex anorectal malformations, REX and Warren for the radical cure of portal hypertension nowadays, minimally-invasive approach is available to almost every patient.

Thoracic Surgery

This division has attracted patients nationwide. Under the guidance of advanced three-dimensional technology, we can perform thoracoscopic lobectomy/segmentectomy for the treatment of lobar/multiple segmental lesions. Besides, we also have accumulated rich experience in giant mediastinal tumors, hiatal hernia, diaphragmatic hernia and mediastinal tumors treatment by novel minimally invasive approach.

Urology

Many patients diagnosed of urinary abnormality and hermaphroditism, trauma and tumors have been admitted to our department. With experience accumulated, we have established a systemic and integrated protocol of diagnosis and treatment for diseases mentioned above, which has is at advanced level in China.

Hemangioma/Vascular Malformation

Our department initiated the comprehensive therapy for hemangioma, which became the most characteristic treatment strategy of hemangioma in China rapidly. With the continuous improvement of technology, our department has been in line with international standards for diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, we have established a series of diagnosis and treatment systems.

Oncology

As one of the earliest medical units for pediatric solid tumor treatment in China, our department is the initiator of the Oncology Group of Pediatric Surgery. We have joined the international community regarding comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for nephroblastoma, neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma and other solid tumors in children, especially giant retroperitoneal tumors, mediastinal tumors, recurrent tumors, metastatic tumors.

Neonatology

As one of the few units in China that can perform ex-utero intrapartum surgery, our department has accomplished thoracoscopic treatment for giant neonatal cystadenoma. The minimally invasive treatment for some complex neonatal malformations has become our routine, like congenital esophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, congenital diaphragmatic eventration, cloaco and complex recto-urethral fistula.
