Department of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery, founded in 1940s, was one of the earliest departments to conduct neurological surgery in China. On the basis of hard work of several generations, the department has developed into a clinical discipline integrating patient care, education and research. It carries out the diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of neurosurgical diseases including tumors, vascular diseases, traumas, infections, malformations and functional disease.

The department undertakes the clinical education of postgraduates, undergraduates, college students, standardized training students, and refreshers, which trained numerous surgeons for Northwest China, many of which have become academic leaders and technical experts in their hospital. The department has made outstanding contributions to the neuroscience development of Shaanxi province and Northwest China.

Our department focus on the basic/clinical research of brain injury, brain tumors and vascular diseases. It has undertaken over 30 national and provincial scientific research projects, obtaining 5 provincial scientific and technological progress awards, with 300 papers and 10 monographs published.

Microneurosurgery

We firstly conduct microneurosurgery in China as early as in 1980s. It has shown great effect in the treatment of many diseases including tumors (gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, schwannomas, metastases, etc.), cerebrovascular diseases (aneurysms, AVM, arteriovenous fistula, Moyamoya disease, etc.), and malformation (hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, spina bifida, etc.).

Head Trauma

The treatment of traumatic brain injury is the traditional advantage technology of our department. We have accumulated rich experience in the treatment of various kinds of head trauma, saving a large number of lives and being widely recognized by peers and patients. We have successfully accomplished many rescue tasks in emergencies and disasters, which won us trust and praise from society and government.

Functional Neurosurgery

The department has been performing microvascular decompression (MVD) since 2007. Over 2000 patients with facial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia or glossopharyngeal neuralgia have been treated with excellent postoperative outcomes. It has become a featured unit and lecturer group member of China Microvascular Decompression for Cranial Nerve Disorders Association, and a member of China Multi-center Clinical Research Program of MVD for Cranial Nerve Disorders. In addition, the radiofrequency therapy for trigeminal neuralgia performed in our department has achieved great success.

Endoscopic Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery started developing neuroendoscopic technology from 2003, the Center of Neuroendoscopic Surgery set for which is one of the earliest units of neuroendoscopic surgery in Shaanxi Province and Northwest China. This technology has been applied to many diseases like hydrocephalus,  suprasellar cistern cyst, arachnoid cyst, pituitary adenoma, ventricular lesion, cerebral hemorrhage.

Cerebrovascular Diseases

The department can provide neurointerventional therapy for patients with various vascular diseases including embolization of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid-cavernous fistulas or dural arteriovenous fistulas, preoperative embolization of intracranial hypervascular tumors, stenting of cerebral artery stenosis, mechanical thrombolysis of intracranial venous sinus thrombosis, etc.

Epilepsy Surgery

The department has accumulated rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy caused by brain tumors, trauma and vascular diseases. In addition,  it could provide surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy, such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), anterior temporal lobectomy, etc.

Spinal Surgery

In 1994, the first case of transoral approach to odontoid process in Shaanxi was successfully carried out in our department. A large number of spinal tumors, deformities, tethered cord syndrome have been treated successfully in our department.
