Department of Orthopedics III
The Department of Orthopedics III of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University is a national key clinical specialty of National Health Commission, and is one of the first batch of key medical disciplines in Shaanxi province, as well as a conferment site of master and doctoral degree. Established in 2009, the third section of the orthopedics department has 30 registered practitioners, including 4 professors and chief surgeons, 4 associate professors, 1 doctoral supervisor, 5 master supervisors, 12 with M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree.
Our department is characterized by orthopedics trauma treatment, spine surgery, and joint surgery. We have an average of 14,000 outpatients, 850 inpatients per year, and more than 800 cases of various operations. Currently, we are featured in the diagnosis and treatment of complex trauma, spine injury, spinal cord injury, spinal bifida, spinal scoliosis, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, spinal tumors, femoral head aseptic necrosis. We are also skilled in the orthopedic surgeries including shoulder, elbow, hip and knee joint replacement, anterior and posterior fixation for various diseases of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine，reduction and fixation for multiple fractures.
The section has an average annual more than 500 surgeries for the treatment of spinal diseases such as cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis, spinal tuberculosis, and spinal tumors. For more than 30 years, we have run clinical researches on the disease of longitudinal division of the spinal cord system, which is in the leading position in China and helped us gain provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Award. We have rich experience in targeted treatment for spinal tuberculosis patients based on the range and type of lesions. Our treatment of anterior combined posterior decompression and fixation for the patients with severe spinal tuberculosis abscess, multiple necrotic bones and obvious spinal cord compression, also showed great effect. Our staff have accumulated a lot of experience in the initial and revision surgery of complex hip and knee joint arthroplasty, and joint replacement in the treatment of shoulder, hip and knee tumors, and master unique treatments for children and adults’ congenital dislocation of hip joint.
Our department now undertakes more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial research projects, and have obtained 7 national patents. Our practitioners have taken the post of chairmen of committee twice, deputy chairmen of committee twice, and standing committee member four times at provincial and municipal level. More than 40 scientific papers have been published, over 20 of which were indexed by SCI, with 1 collected by world-famous journal Lancet. The department undertakes the training of undergraduate, graduate and advanced students, nearly 10 people every year. We have also sent several practitioners to study both domestically and abroad.
