The Department of Anesthesiology of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University was established in 1950s. Due to great efforts of several generations of anesthesiologists in more than 50-year hard time, it has been playing a leading role in the northwest area and even in the whole country in medicine, teaching and scientific research. It was listed as National Key Clinical Specialist and Shaanxi Advantage Medical Specialist. It has been selected as the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology Training Center for Pediatric Anesthesia, the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology Training Center for Geriatric Patients Anesthesia, and the Inhalation Anesthesia Training Center. It’s also been authorized as the National Clinical Pharmacological Center, the Chair Unit of Shaanxi Anesthesia Society.
The Department has the globally advanced anesthesia devices and technologies, and all 24 operating rooms are equipped with imported anesthesia and monitoring equipment. Keeping up with developed countries, we equipped ourselves with the most advanced devices and mastered the most advanced skills, including target-controlled infusion technology, BIS monitoring and other anesthesia depth monitoring, various visually difficult airway intubation devices, colored Doppler ultrasound guided invasive procedures and intraoperative hemodynamic evaluation, blood salvage techniques, cardiac output monitoring, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and non-invasive real-time arterial blood pressure monitoring system. All of these provide better care for patients during surgery. Anesthesia of all severely ill patients would be operated properly and safely, especially for removal of intratracheal foreign bodies and pediatric surgeries. In recent years, we have accomplished anesthesia for the first neonatal surgery with extremely low weight in northwest region, the first intraoperative awakening technique for prolonged surgery for infraorbital tumor in China, children with rarely seen malignant hypertension of high-risk, and one lung ventilation of infants and young children during anesthesia. Our post-anesthesia recovery room is equipped with full devices, advanced technology and reasonable staffing. Meanwhile, we have practiced postoperative painless rehabilitation, painless abortion, painless gastrointestinal endoscopy and treatment, painless bronchoscopy and treatment, labor analgesia and other techniques.
We are responsible for teaching of the eight-year and five-year program medical students and are also authorized to grant medical doctoral and master degrees. We now have 1 doctoral supervisors, 5 master supervisors and have nurtured numerous doctoral and postgraduate students. We took responsibility in the national standardized training of residents and are one of the first batch of anesthesia standardized training center in Shaanxi Province.
Our researches focus on anesthesia and brain. We have received 12 grants of the National Natural Science Foundation Projects of China, 30 grants of provincial and ministerial research projects, and have published more than 80 Scientific Citation Indexed articles. We have obtained a number of patents of invention. We obtained 1 First Prize and 1 Second Prize of Shaanxi Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and 1 Xi'an Science and Technology Progress Award. Professor Xue Rongliang, Professor Zhang Pengbo, Professor Lv Jianrui and other 15 physicians are in important positions at the national, provincial and municipal academic associations.
