Department of Ultrasound Diagnosis
The Medical Ultrasound Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University was founded in early 1970. Designated as the Ultrasound Research Center by the National Ministry of Health in 1979, one of the only two in China at that time, the department later was authorized as Shaanxi Province Advantaged Specialized Department, Shaanxi Ultrasonic Diagnosis Quality Control Center, Shaanxi Prenatal Ultrasound Screening Center, and the State Institution of Clinical Trials on Drugs. The Ph.D. conferring unit started in 2009. In 2017 the State Thyroid Training Center was granted by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and in the same year, the department was awarded, among the first batch, the International Training Center for the normalization training of Chinese resident doctors and backbone doctors. Since 1998, it has been the main committee unit of Ultrasound Branch of Shaanxi Medical Association for several consecutive terms. Since 2013, it has been the main committee unit of the Ultrasound Branch of Xi'an Medical Association. After the development of more than 40 years, the ultrasound medical team here has made significant progress based on their predecessors and created a brilliant prospect. Owing to its strong technical force, advanced medical equipment and a reasonable talent team, the department has become a high-quality professional one at present, having a dominant influence inside and outside the province, and winning an outstanding reputation across China.
There are 3 re-employed professors, 39 doctors (3 chief physicians, 7 deputy chief physicians, 6 attending doctors, 20 inpatients, and 3 nurses) in the department. In terms of degree they received, there are 7 PhDs, 7 PhD. candidates and 21 masters.
Clinical: The department performs conventional ultrasound diagnosis of multiple systems and organs. New ultrasound technologies are actively applied, including contrast-enhanced ultrasonography, elastography, radio-frequency ablation guided by ultrasound, 3D hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography, gastrointestinal-contrast sonography and so on. Advantages have been established in fields such as thyroid ultrasonography, interventional ultrasound, prenatal ultrasound, children Kawasaki disease, etc. In particular, the thyroid multi-modality ultrasound technique and interventional therapy run in the forefront in China with great influence.
Teaching: The department undertakes the duty of teaching and internship of ultrasonic diagnosis for undergraduate and seven-year medical students, standardized training students are also parts of its regular tasks. About 50 further-education physicians from both inside and outside the province are accepted each year. Altogether more than 1,000 further-education physicians have been trained here. In the past 5 years, the training of 6 national continuing education classes and 5 provincial ones has been held.
Scientific researches: A total of 55 scientific research projects were undertaken. These include 3 national ones, 30 provincial and ministerial ones, and 22 bureau-/university- and college- ones. 21 awards in scientific and technological achievements at all levels were received. Meanwhile, the department professionals have compiled 5 textbooks as the chief compiler and another one as the deputy compiler. They also participated in the compilation of 15 books and translated one book. More than 400 academic papers and more than 20 SCI papers have been published.
